Fire Effects Workshops
I have thoroughly enjoyed leading these specialized workshops. My work involves establishing monitoring plots to evaluate first- and second-order fire effects, as well as the cultural fire effects aligned with the burn objectives, while incorporating the values and priorities of those involved.
Recently, in response to growing interest in improving post-wildfire salvage operations, I have been training professionals to assess tree mortality probabilities using reliable, field-tested ground-truthing methods.
These workshops are conducted on-site at both past and current prescribed fires and cultural burns, providing a comprehensive analysis of fire effects before, during, and after the burn.
-
Burn Boss
I have integrated my experience as a Burn Boss, Firing Boss, and Holding Boss into my consulting work. The Burn Boss role has always been a particular passion of mine, and I continue to approach it with professionalism, dedication, and a strong awareness of the risks and liabilities associated with controlled burning.
This work has provided valuable opportunities to collaborate with and mentor local fire departments, provincial governments, researchers, First Nation communities, other consultants, and Type 2 Contractors.
Since 2022, in addition to the numerous burns I conducted as a government employee, I have participated in 15 successful burns covering approximately 1,900 hectares—serving as a Type 2 Burn Boss for ten burns, a Type 3 Burn Boss for three burns, and supporting BC Wildfire Service as a FEMO Coach for three burns.
-
Cultural and Prescribed Fire Burn Plans
With extensive experience in fire behavior, ecology, and as a Burn Boss, I create efficient, thorough, and practical burn plans designed for the burn team.
I have developed plans for hazard fuel reduction, ecological restoration, and traditional benefits across provincial Crown land, First Nation territories, municipal areas, and private properties.
I work closely with community members and stakeholders to build community burn programs. My plans have supported burns by Xwisten, Ashcroft Indian Band, the Cities of Kimberley and Cranbrook, BC Parks, and the BC Wildfire Risk Reduction Program, with more projects underway.
-
Fire Effects Monitoring
I conduct pre-, post-, and long-term fire effects monitoring to evaluate whether prescribed fire objectives are met. Trained in the Fire Monitoring Handbook, I also utilize FIREMON, FCCS, and FNESS (cultural FEMO) guidance, tailoring methods to align with specific values and goals.
By combining burn-day observations with burn severity analysis, I assess short-term outcomes, while ongoing monitoring informs adaptive management planning to ensure objectives are continuously evaluated and refined.
I collaborate with community members to design and implement monitoring plans. As with burn plan development, I prioritize mentoring community and agency members, empowering them to lead and sustain their burn programs.
-
Prescription Development
Building a successful burn program begins with a comprehensive plan and prescription that examines the land through a socio-ecological lens.
Non-burn prescriptions—such as those for ecosystem restoration, fuel management, and wildfire prevention—provide the foundation for the strategic use of fire in coordination with other management actions. By integrating expertise in professional forestry, fire ecology, biology, and hands-on burning experience, I deliver clear, practical prescriptions tailored to both ecological systems and community needs.
I have developed prescriptions for First Nation communities, non-governmental organizations, provincial governments, and municipalities.
